March Reflection

In the 1750s, at a time when Catholic schools were illegal, Nano opened 7 schools in Cork to teach the children of the poor. The schools taught basic reading, writing and arithmetic. Each day she spent some time teaching the children in the school about God’s love for them and their faith. At night she was to be seen carrying a lantern – visiting the sick and the poor.

Out of her own funds she established an alms house for women and built a Convent for the Ursuline Sisters. The foundation for the Ursuline sisters did not turn out the way she had wanted because they would not leave their enclosure – this was a severe trail for Nano but because of it, the presentation Sisters were founded.

“We must think the Almighty permits everything for the best. You will see with His assistance everything promises well. And His Divine hand will uphold us...”Nano Nagle (Letter IV)

“I began in a poor humble manner; and  though it pleased the Divine Will to give  me severe trials in this foundation, yet it is to show that it is His work and has not been affected by human means.” Nano Nagle (Letter I)

March’s reflections based on the sayings above:

  • I began in a poor humble manner; and  though it pleased the Divine Will to give  me severe trials in this foundation, yet it is to show that it is His work and has not been affected by human means.” As Nano reflects back on the beginnings of the schools she is able to see the power of God working through it all. She recalls the obstacles, and challenges that she encountered as she embarked on the dream of establishing her schools as well as the opportunities. Surprised by their rapid growth and expansion, and by the support from family and friends who had a lot to lose, she also experienced a deep sense of delight and joy in teaching the children. Like Nano, I can look back on different experiences in my life and see that God was powerfully present even though I may not have been aware of it at the time.

I may not be called to open schools today, but like Nano, responding to God’s call is a daily commitment. It requires a deep listening to God, an open heart and mind and a willingness and commitment to serve the community in m ministry of leadership, for the good of all. Yes there are many challenges, opportunities and wonderful companions who support this journey. As we look to the future it can feel overwhelming at times but we do what we can and trust the outcome into the hands of God.

  • “We must think the Almighty permits everything for the best. You will see with His assistance everything promises well. And His Divine hand will uphold us...” These inspiring words of Nano are as important for us today as they were when she wrote them. They lead us to seek the divine will in all we do.
